The challenge ...

... is to convert my Dad's Standard 8 and Super 8 cinefilm to glorious 1080p HD. He was a keen photographer and recorded lots of silent cinefilm from 1968 until 2000.

Many of my childhood memories are captured in these films. Along with the usual family shots (babies, weddings, beaches and gardens) there are also lot's of historical transport with trains, boats and cars from family holidays. The films span two generations of the family, I feature as a bouncing baby all my nephews and nieces make an appearance and it also includes my son.

There is also the Apollo 12 Moon landing, but I don't think my Dad actually took that one :).

So why not use a professional service for the transfer? Well my Dad shoot quite a lot of film:
  • 13 200ft reels of Standard 8
  • 5 50ft reels of Standard 8
  • 6 200ft reels of Super 8
This totals 5 hours of footage,  and professional services will charge over £400 to covert these films - and that is just for standard definition transfer. In these days of HD it makes more sense to capture these precious memories in 1080p if possible.

So first a transfer service is expensive, secondly it'll be much more fun to build my own telecine machine and capture the videos myself!
